Rooted in Amish Tradition

The Amish of Kentucky live a life of simplicity and purpose, free from many of the distractions of the modern world. Their days are guided by family, faith, and the work of their hands. Whether it’s building furniture, cooking meals, or crafting natural products, Amish-made means top-notch quality—built to last, pure in form, and made with an attention to detail that’s nearly impossible to find anywhere else.

At Farmwald’s, you’ll experience this tradition in everything we do. Our restaurant and deli serve up hearty Amish-style meals—slow-cooked, hand-prepared, and made from pure, natural ingredients with no toxins or additives. The bakery fills the air with the smell of fresh pies, breads, and pastries made daily from scratch. And in our country store, you’ll find shelves stocked with Amish-made goods—everything from jams and candles to soaps, lotions, and body products, each created with wholesome, natural ingredients and care that only comes from true craftsmanship.

A bridge between two worlds

A Family Story That Bridged Together Two Worlds

To understand Farmwald’s, you have to know the story of Joe’s mother, Elizabeth Joan (Joanie) Farmwald.

Before she was part of the Amish community, Joanie lived what most would call the good life. At 18 years old, she was a typical English, or non-Amish, young woman. She had a new car, nice clothes, makeup, and loved rock music. Life seemed full and exciting, and her path was clear: college in the fall, an engagement to a nice Catholic boy, and a future in the modern world.

But everything changed one weekend when Joanie and a friend decided to visit a nearby Amish community. What she found there wasn’t just a different way of life; it was a sense of peace and purpose she didn’t even realize she was missing. The people she met lived simply but richly, grounded in faith, humility, and community.

And that’s when she met Jonas Farmwald, a young Amish man. She was English, and he was Amish. Two worlds that rarely meet and almost never mix had collided.

Would Jonas leave his community to be with her?

Or would Joanie leave behind the only life she had ever known to join his?

Their love story defied convention, tested faith, and ultimately built a bridge between two completely different worlds. It is a story of courage, conviction, and transformation, one that Joanie shares in her deeply moving book, A Bridge Between Two Worlds: My Journey to Be Amish.
